Tax Collection

(609) 652-3700 ext 234    Hours: Mon-Fri 8:30 AM to 4:30 PM

Chief Financial Officer: Marilyn Dolcy

  Deputy Tax Collector: Joan Truman

The Tax Collector is charged with the receipt and collection of all taxes, assessments and sewer fees both current and delinquent. All funds are remitted to the Tax Collection Department.

It is important to note that the municipal taxes are only a portion of a Galloway Township property taxpayer's obligation. Three other separate governmental entities, Atlantic County government, Galloway Township Local Public School District, and the Greater Egg Harbor Regional School District develop and adopt their own budgets to be funded by taxes.

However, New Jersey's fiscal laws require the municipal government of Galloway Township to serve as a billing and collection agency for all four separate entities.

Regional Efficiency Aid Program

The Township has applied for property tax relief aid through a new State program entitled Regional Efficiency Aid Program or REAP. To qualify, a local government must have entered into a shared service agreement after July 1, 1997. The aid is based on the types of shared services, the population of the municipality, and the degree of fiscal stress experienced by the municipality. The Township has been participating in regionalized efforts prior to July 1, 1997. The Township of Galloway Township submitted an application for aid based on our participation in regionalized programs, which started after July 1, 1997 for the regionalization of our Public Assistance program with the County of Atlantic.

This aid would be awarded directly to eligible property owners as a credit against their tax bill. It will appear directly on the tax bill as a REAP Program tax credit. The State of New Jersey will make all eligibility determinations for this tax credit. The property must be a principal residence as of October 1, of the preceding year. Those residential properties that do not qualify this year for the tax credit may be eligible next year. The State is still developing the procedure by which property owners may qualify for the REAP credit later this year and will notify municipalities as to this procedures as soon as it is finalized. The Township of Galloway diligently pursues all types of aid and grants that will benefit the residents of Galloway Township by reducing property taxes.

Real property taxes are due on Feb 1, May 1, August 1 and November 1. The Township Council passed a resolution, which allows for a ten-calendar day grace period. Any real property tax payments received after the 10th calendar day of the month in which the taxes are due will be considered late and interest will be charged. The interest rate charged for late payment of taxes is 8% on the first $1,500.00 and 18% on the amount over $1,500.00. A year-end penalty will be charged at 6% on all delinquent balances (including interest) in excess of $10,000 not received by December 31. Please read the back of the tax bill for valuable information that may answer many of your questions.

Sewer user fees are charged to residents who are connected to the sewer system. Payment is due on April 10th  and September 10th. There is also a ten-calendar day grace period for sewer user fees. Any payment received after the 10-day grace period of the month in which the sewer fees are due will be considered late and interest will be charged. The interest rate charged for late payments of sewer user fees is 8% on the first $1,500.00 and 18% on the amount over $1,500.00.

New Jersey Law (NJS 54:5 et seq) requires all prior year delinquent taxes and municipal charges be sold at an annual Tax Sale.  The Township of Galloway holds an Accelerated Tax in December of each year for all taxes, sewer and other municipal charges delinquent after November 1st the current year.   Affected property owners, mortgage companies and all interested parties will be notified by mail. To avoid publication of a property owner's name and address, all  delinquent municipal charges and all accrued interest and penalties must be received.   If you have more than one delinquent charge (property taxes, sewer charges) a separate check must be received for each.
